In the beginning, there was a wiener. In fact, he was a big wiener, broke but damned good-looking, who had recently moved back to his adopted hometown of
Antigonish, Nova Scotia after struggling through two harsh Halifax winters fighting off bill collectors and the influx of construction companies
in and around his quiet Clayton Park residency.
He and his lovely wife quickly decided that hanging around Glen Air Estates, Antigonish's most esteemed mini-home sanctuary, watching "Trailer Park Boys" on Showcase, just wasn't going
to pay the rent (alas). "Hey", said he, as he bundled up in his warmest trousers and touque, "I reckon I'll set up a hotdog stand today".
With that, he
set out into the cool March day and quickly came upon some excellent mustard, ketchup (Heinz, of course), and relish. "This'll help me, no doubt". In a few quick hours these condiments,
set alongside the other usuals (oh...hot peppers, onions, sauerkraut, hot sauce, donair sauce, salt, pepper, honey mustard, etc, etc), near a blistering hot grill cooking up the very
finest in quality jumbo (yes, this means BIG) wieners and sausages (in Cheddar, Honey Garlic, Octoberfest, Hot Italian, and Donair varieties), Dave's Barbeque was born, and would serve many a hungry
Antigonisher (and the occasional visitor) a fast, cheap and tasty meal from that day on.
Whilst the first stand is located right in between Brosha's Short Stoppe, owned by the most excellent Louis and Eleanor Brosha, and Mother Webbs, those fine purveyors of steak, Dave's Barbeque has since
expanded to become Dave's Barbeques, with a second location on main street in the core of Antigonish's bustling downtown. This second stand, formerly owned by a tall, lanky fellow named
Greg, has provided a second stop to those customers who, upon having bought and devoured a sausage in Lower South River, but have become hungry by the time they hit town (hey, it's a long 5-minute drive), can
stop to ease their hunger with barbeque perfection once again.
Ultimately, life continues on in big wiener world, as life habitually does...
